Best Stargazing Camping Spots
Dark sky camping is defined by Bortle scale readings — the nine-point scale from Class 1 (truly dark, zodiacal light visible, M33 detectable with naked eye) to Class 9 (inner-city sky, only the brightest stars visible). International Dark Sky Places (certified by the IDA) are the most reliably documented locations for low light pollution, with ongoing monitoring requirements as part of the certification. The campgrounds below are either inside certified IDA areas or have been empirically documented at Bortle Class 3 or lower.
1. NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia
The NamibRand Family Hideout sites in the reserve hold IDA International Dark Sky Reserve status — one of the highest light pollution certifications available. At 1,200 to 1,500 metres elevation in the Namib Desert, with no urban centres within 200 km, the Bortle reading here consistently measures Class 1. The Milky Way core is visible at this latitude from February through October. The reserve's name derives from the Namibia Red Rocks — the desert geology is itself a photographic subject during the Milky Way window.
2. Cherry Springs State Park, Pennsylvania, USA
Cherry Springs is the most accessible IDA Gold Tier Dark Sky park in the eastern United States — roughly five hours from New York City. The astronomy campground has a dedicated dark sky field with orientation restrictions (no white lights, no headlights after dark). Telescopes and mounts are accommodated on hardened pads. A star party programme runs on scheduled weekends from April through November. The surrounding Susquehannock State Forest provides additional camping; the state park itself has a small tent area adjacent to the observation field.
3. Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA
Joshua Tree is a certified IDA International Dark Sky Park. The Joshua Tree Lake campground and the Joshua Tree Village Campground are the closest camping to the park boundary. The high desert elevation (900 to 1,250 metres) and the complete absence of cloud cover most of the year produce excellent Bortle Class 3 readings. The astronomy programme run by the park includes periodic star parties; the Cholla Cactus Garden and the Skull Rock trailhead are the best night photography locations in the park.
4. Exmoor National Park, UK
Exmoor holds IDA International Dark Sky Reserve status — one of only a handful in the UK. The Dunkery Beacon area and the upland moors south of Dunster produce Bortle Class 3 conditions on clear nights. Several farm campgrounds on the moor operate within or adjacent to the dark sky zone. The Atlantic horizon from the northern sea cliffs adds a low western sky for planet-setting photography. Cloud cover is the primary obstacle; October through March produces more clear nights than summer.
5. Atacama Desert, Chile
The Atacama at 2,400 to 4,000 metres elevation with an essentially zero cloud cover percentage makes the southern altiplano the best astronomical site in the world — the major international observatories (ALMA, ESO La Silla, ESO Paranal) are located here for that reason. Camping at San Pedro de Atacama puts you within an hour of multiple Class 1 sites. Independent camping in the national reserve areas (Valle de la Luna, Salar de Atacama) requires a fee but is easily arranged. The Magellanic Clouds are directly visible here — the Southern Hemisphere advantage.
6. Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand
The Aoraki Mackenzie reserve around Lake Tekapo in the South Island's Mackenzie Basin is the largest IDA International Dark Sky Reserve in the world by area — 4,367 square kilometres. The Mount John Observatory sits above Tekapo village; the camping at Tekapo Holiday Park is within the dark zone. The southern Milky Way core and the large and small Magellanic Clouds are among the most detailed in the southern sky from this latitude (-44 degrees). Winter (June through August) provides the longest dark hours.
7. Galloway Forest Park, Scotland
The first IDA Dark Sky Park in the UK. The Galloway Forest Park camping and caravan club sites are within the designated dark sky zone. Bortle Class 2 readings in the core dark sky area on the Murray's Monument moorland. The Scotland dark sky season (winter: October through March) requires genuine cold-weather camping kit. The compensation is aurora borealis visibility during periods of elevated solar activity.
8. Tsavo East National Park, Kenya
At latitude minus 2 degrees south, Tsavo East provides equatorial stargazing with both hemispheres of the Milky Way accessible from a single night's camping. The dry season (December through February, June through October) produces exceptionally clear nights. The Kamboyo Public Campsite and several bush camps within the park are the overnight bases. The horizontal zone of the ecliptic puts the planets at near-overhead positions, providing good visibility for solar system observation.
9. Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA
Big Bend is a certified IDA International Dark Sky Park in the Chihuahuan Desert. The Rio Grande Village Campground and the Chisos Basin Campground are within the park. The park's location in far west Texas, 200 km from any significant urban centre, produces Bortle Class 3 to 4 readings across the park with Class 2 in the most remote backcountry. The Trans-Pecos region of Texas is home to several IDA-certified areas; Big Bend is the most accessible for tent camping.
10. Zabriskie Point area, Death Valley, California, USA
Death Valley National Park is an IDA International Dark Sky Park. The campgrounds at Furnace Creek and Mesquite Spring provide the closest in-park camping. The salt flat elevation (below sea level at the lowest points) and the absence of moisture in the air produce exceptional transparency. Camping in summer is dangerous due to temperatures regularly exceeding 45 degrees; the dark sky season for comfortable camping runs from October through March. The night sky at Zabriskie Point with the badlands landscape in the foreground is among the most-photographed dark sky compositions in North America.
Equipment for dark sky camping
A red-light headlamp is mandatory — white light destroys night vision in 20 minutes and takes 30 to 45 minutes to recover. A star chart app (SkySafari, Stellarium) used with a red screen filter provides real-time sky orientation without disrupting adaptation. For photography: a camera with a manual mode capable of 20-30 second exposures, a wide-angle lens of f/2.8 or wider, and a sturdy tripod. ISO 3200 to 6400 with a 20-second exposure at f/2.8 is the starting exposure for Milky Way imaging.
