Choosing a Backpack Volume: 35L, 50L, 65L, or More?

Backpack volume is measured in litres and describes the internal storage capacity of the pack body. The right volume is a function of three things: trip duration, gear system weight and bulk, and personal packing discipline. The primary mistake most new backpackers make is choosing a volume too large — a 75-litre pack purchased for a three-night trip becomes a liability because the extra volume gets filled with non-essential items that add weight without adding value.

The volume guide by trip duration

The industry standard framework, adjusted for a modern lightweight gear system:

20 to 35 litres: day hiking with full kit (water, layers, emergency shelter, first aid, food for one day). Weekend overnight trips with an ultralight gear system (sub-900g shelter, 700g sleeping bag, foam pad).

35 to 50 litres: two to four night trips with a lightweight gear system. The most versatile volume for the majority of three-season backpacking trips. Current benchmark packs: Osprey Exos 48, Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 Southwest, Granite Gear Blaze 46.

50 to 65 litres: four to seven night trips with a standard-weight gear system. Or shorter trips where winter clothing bulk adds volume. Benchmark packs: Gregory Baltoro 65, Osprey Atmos 65.

65 litres and above: seven or more night trips in remote areas with food for the full duration; winter mountaineering trips with bulky insulation layers; expedition use. The Gregory Baltoro 75 and the Osprey Aether 70 represent this category.

Fit is more important than volume

A poorly fitting pack carrying 12 kg is more fatiguing than a well-fitting pack carrying 14 kg. The hip belt carries 70 to 80 percent of a correctly loaded pack's weight; a hip belt that sits above the iliac crest (the bony projection at the top of the pelvis) transfers load to the lower spine instead. Torso length — the distance from the C7 vertebra (the bony bump at the base of the neck) to the top of the iliac crest — determines the correct back panel length. Most quality backpack manufacturers offer at least three back lengths for each model.

The fitting process: load the pack to approximately two-thirds capacity with dense items in the main compartment. Put the pack on, tighten the hip belt so it sits centred on the iliac crest, then tighten the shoulder straps until they contact the shoulder without lifting the belt. Check the load lifter angle — the straps connecting the shoulder harness to the top of the framesheet should angle upward at approximately 30 to 45 degrees. A flatter angle indicates the pack is too long; a steeper angle indicates too short.

Internal frame systems

Most quality backpacks use either a framesheet (a single flat sheet of plastic or aluminium running the full back panel length) or a dual stay system (two aluminium stays embedded in the back panel that can be bent to match back curvature). The dual stay system is generally more comfortable because it matches the lumbar curve; the framesheet is simpler and requires no fitting adjustment.

Some ultralight backpacks (Hyperlite, GossamerGear) use no frame at all — the pack body is held rigid by the sleeping pad when inserted vertically against the back panel. This works well for loads under 8 to 10 kg but becomes uncomfortable above that weight because there is nothing to transfer load to the hip belt.

Pack organisation

The typical internal frame backpack has a main compartment, a top lid pocket, a front pocket, and two side pockets. The loading sequence matters: heavy dense items (food, water, cookware) go close to the back and at mid-spine height; lighter items (sleeping bag, clothing) go at the bottom; frequently accessed items (rain jacket, snacks, map) go at the top or in the lid pocket. The tent poles and stakes typically run vertically between the main compartment and the back panel.

Compression straps

Compression straps on the sides and front of the pack cinch the load down when the pack is not fully filled. A half-empty 65-litre pack without compression straps sways and shifts with each stride because the load is not in contact with the back panel. Using the compression straps fully when the pack is less than 70 percent full is as important as the original packing sequence.

The women's specific fit question

Women's-specific pack models use a shorter torso length scale, a narrower shoulder harness, and a hip belt angled to match the female pelvis geometry. For women with a torso length below 45 cm, a women's-specific model from Osprey, Gregory, or Deuter provides a better fit than a unisex model sized down. For women with a longer torso, the unisex range at the shorter end is equally appropriate. Try both before purchasing if possible — the fit test in the shop at full load is the only reliable evaluation.
