Choosing a Camp Stove: Jetboil vs MSR and the Full Range
Camp stove selection is one of the more consequential gear decisions because it affects fuel planning for the entire trip, cooking method options, and cold-weather performance. The four main categories — canister stoves, integrated cooking systems, liquid fuel stoves, and alcohol stoves — each have a specific use profile that makes them the right choice in certain conditions and the wrong choice in others.
Canister stoves
Canister stoves screw onto a threaded isobutane/propane fuel canister. The simplest are a single burner head with no legs (Jetboil MicroMo, MSR PocketRocket 2) that balance directly on the canister. The advantages: lightweight (the MSR PocketRocket 2 weighs 74 grams), fast to set up, and using a widely available fuel. The disadvantages: fuel canisters are pressurised vessels that lose pressure as temperature drops — isobutane-propane mixtures perform significantly worse below 0 degrees C; the canister must be kept warm in cold conditions. Canister stoves work well in three-season conditions and are the first choice for most spring-summer-autumn backpacking.
The remaining fuel level in a canister cannot be read visually — canisters feel the same whether they contain 80 percent or 20 percent of fuel. The standard field technique is to float the canister in water and note how high it rides — more fuel means it rides lower. Carry a spare canister on trips of more than three days.
Integrated cooking systems
The Jetboil series (Flash, MiniMo, Stash) and the MSR Windburner combine a burner head, a coiled heat exchanger pot, and insulation into a single unit. The heat exchanger — an accordion-folded aluminium collar at the base of the pot — increases thermal efficiency by channelling heat into the pot rather than into the surrounding air. The result is significantly faster boil times and better fuel economy than a conventional canister stove, particularly in wind.
The Jetboil Flash boils a half litre in approximately 100 seconds in lab conditions; the MSR PocketRocket 2 takes approximately 3.5 minutes with the same quantity. The boil-efficiency advantage of the integrated system is real, but only relevant if you are eating primarily hot drinks, dehydrated meals, and instant food that only require boiling water. Cooking actual food — sauteing, simmering, making sauces — is difficult in the narrow, deep Jetboil pot. For cooking variety, a conventional canister stove with a wide, low titanium pot provides better results.
Liquid fuel stoves
Liquid fuel stoves (MSR WhisperLite, Dragonfly) use a refillable fuel bottle and can run on white gas, unleaded petrol, kerosene, or (on the Dragonfly) diesel. The advantages: cold-weather performance is superior to canister stoves because the fuel does not lose pressure in the cold; fuel is available worldwide, including in regions where isobutane canisters cannot be imported or are unavailable; and the cost per meal is lower on long trips because liquid fuel is cheaper per unit of energy than canister fuel.
The disadvantages: priming (warming the burner to vaporise fuel before it ignites) is required on cold starts; simmering control is less precise than a canister stove (the WhisperLite is known for being either on high or off); and the system is heavier (250 to 350 grams plus fuel bottle). The liquid fuel stove is the correct choice for any trip involving winter camping, travel in regions with unreliable canister availability, or trips long enough that liquid fuel cost savings become significant.
Alcohol stoves
Alcohol stoves — Trangia, homemade can stoves, Toaks titanium — burn methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) that is available in hardware stores worldwide. Advantages: completely silent, no moving parts, near-indestructible, and fuel is available in countries where camping fuel canisters are not. Disadvantages: slow boil times (5 to 8 minutes versus 100 seconds for an integrated system), no flame control once lit, performance decreases significantly in wind unless a windshield is used, and the fuel produces less energy per gram than isobutane.
The Trangia system is the classic reference — a Swedish design that has been manufactured since 1951 with virtually no changes. The windshield integrated into the Trangia pot set makes it far more wind-resistant than a bare alcohol burner on a canister stove; the Trangia outperforms most canister setups in a crosswind.
Wood gasifier stoves
Wood-burning stoves (BioLite CampStove, Solo Stove Lite) use small diameter dead wood fuel found at the campsite. The appeal is no fuel to carry; the limitation is that they cannot be used where fires are prohibited (many national parks, fire-ban periods, above treeline). The BioLite also generates USB charging electricity from the heat of combustion — a useful feature on longer trips. Wood gasifiers work well in forested areas with consistent dead wood supply; they are impractical in treeless or fire-restricted terrain.
The correct stove for each scenario
Solo summer backpacking, three to five days, US or European forests: Jetboil Stash or MSR PocketRocket 2 with a titanium mug.
Group car camping or base camp cooking: MSR Dragonfly or a two-burner propane stove (Coleman, Primus) for the cooking range capability.
Winter camping: MSR WhisperLite with a fuel bottle pre-warmed inside the sleeping bag at altitude.
International travel where canister availability is uncertain: Trangia alcohol system with spare fuel purchased locally.
