Knot Tying for Campers

Knot knowledge in camping is one of those foundational skills that is easy to learn at a basic level and genuinely useful from the first night. Most campers need only eight knots to handle the full range of camping applications — shelter rigging, bear line hanging, load securing, rescue-adjacent situations, and joining cord of different diameters. The goal is not to memorise a catalogue but to internalise a small set well enough to tie them under cold, gloved, or low-light conditions.

The bowline

The bowline creates a fixed loop that does not slip under load and can be easily untied even after being stressed. It is the single most useful knot in camping and outdoor use. The mnemonic "the rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole" describes the tying sequence accurately: make a small loop (the hole) in the standing part of the line, pass the working end (the rabbit) through from underneath, around behind the standing part, then back through the loop. The bowline should always be dressed — pulled snug and correctly shaped — before loading.

Use cases: securing a tarp ridgeline to a tree, attaching a bear bag haul line to a branch, anchoring a hammock end loop when the integrated loop is damaged.

The clove hitch

The clove hitch consists of two half-hitches and provides a fast, adjustable attachment to a cylindrical object — a branch, tent pole, or post. It is not secure under load from multiple directions and requires a locking half-hitch or stopper knot if used in situations where the load direction might reverse. Tying speed is its primary advantage.

Use cases: attaching guylines to adjustable poles, setting up a ridgeline with an intermediate anchor, quickly fixing a line to a carabiner.

The taut-line hitch

A sliding knot that holds under tension but can be repositioned when tension is released. This is the standard adjustable knot for tent and tarp guylines — it replaces the plastic adjusters that come with most tents, which can crack in cold weather. The taut-line hitch is tied around the standing line and holds by friction, but only when loaded in one direction.

The sheet bend and double sheet bend

The sheet bend joins two lines of different diameters reliably. The thicker rope forms the bight (the fixed loop), and the thinner rope passes through and around it. The double sheet bend adds a second pass of the thinner rope for additional security when the diameter difference is large or either rope is wet or stiff.

Use cases: extending a bear hang line, joining a thin guy-line to a thicker static rope, field repair of a broken lashing.

The figure-eight on a bight

The figure-eight on a bight creates a strong fixed loop that is highly unlikely to jam permanently under even heavy loads. It is the standard load-bearing loop in climbing and rescue work, but its utility in camping lies in applications where you need a reliable loop mid-rope without cutting: hanging a food bag from a central point on a rope strung between two trees, creating an anchor point in an improvised rescue situation.

The trucker's hitch

A mechanical advantage system created from a combination of knots — typically a fixed loop (figure-eight or overhand on a bight) and a block-and-tackle configuration — that allows you to tension a line very tightly using minimal force. Essential for tarp ridgelines, strapping loads on roof racks or trailers, and any application requiring very high initial tension.

The trucker's hitch requires a locking half-hitch to hold the tension once achieved, otherwise it will release when you let go of the working end.

The prusik

The prusik is a friction hitch made from a loop of smaller-diameter cord wrapped around a larger-diameter rope. It grips when loaded and slides when unloaded. Its camping use is primarily in hauling systems — creating a ratchet point on a bear bag haul, improvising a rescue mechanical advantage system. The friction depends on diameter ratio: a 5-6 mm cord looped around a 9-10 mm rope is standard.

The overhand and double overhand stopper

These are the simplest knots but critical as stoppers at the ends of lines passing through hardware (rings, carabiners, tent anchor points). The double overhand — tie an overhand, then pass the working end through the loop again before tightening — is significantly more reliable than the single, which can work loose over time.

Cordage selection

Paracord (550 cord) is the standard all-purpose camping line. It has a 250 kg breaking strength, acceptable stretch, and comes in useful 4 mm diameter. The inner strands can be extracted for finer work. For tarps and ridgelines, a low-stretch accessory cord (3-4 mm Dyneema or polyester) performs better than paracord because high-stretch lines make tarp adjustment difficult in wind.

Natural-fibre rope (jute, hemp, sisal) is not recommended for critical-load applications — it degrades rapidly when wet, has low and variable breaking strength, and does not hold knots consistently. Synthetic cord in all camping applications.

Practice methodology

Tie each knot twenty times in sequence before relying on it in the field. Then tie it with eyes closed, or behind your back, to build the muscle memory that allows field tying in the dark with cold hands. The standard test for each knot is to load it firmly and then check whether it is tied as intended — a knot that looks right but was tied incorrectly often reveals the error only under load, which is too late.
